I don't know if this is still how insurance companies are working, but it used to be that if you had a surgery that was to be covered by insurance and it involved the removal of anything, it would have to be sent to a facility owned by the insurance company to be weighed/assessed. This is to confirm what the surgeon is marking down as correct and that it really happened so the insurance will cover your surgery (many people were disappointed to find they couldn't keep their appendix or tonsils in a jar anymore lol). So the men and women keeping their body parts from their surgeries are quite possibly paying out of pocket. If you're paying for elective surgeries like that, you're not as oppressed as you claim.
