It was about camping, kayaking, survival skills, hiking, tracking, swimming, campfires, ghost stories, roasting marshmallows etc... When they were teenagers, camp changed from rustic outdoor activities to themed camp experiences - like Science Camp and Art Camp, Bike Camp and Music Camp.
I'm a boomer and even I went to camp as a kid! Brownies, Girlguide, Book (my fav) and SCIENCE CAMPS. My sisters and brother went to hockey camp. We were all forced to go to AIRCADET camp.

I have never understood parents and unfortunately it's usually the mothers who campaign for their son's to play in girls sports. Had my son been a female impersonator, there is no way on god's earth I would have let him compete with the girls. Whether this is because I did "sports" 😂 and competed on a national level or because it's common sense, I'm not sure

I became an adult in the 1970s and went to summer camp in the 1960s. His story does not line up with my experience which was in a more repressive time made worse by one of my camping experiences being run by the Catholic church (where the most frequent activity for girls was cleaning the latrines). Male resentment of the female experience is based on fantasy, not reality. These guys want your pity so they make this shit up or re-cast their childhood experiences to comport with their new dogma. "Young folks get to be themselves" -- by that they are not referring to girls.
It's all about them: women and girls are just an audience for their performance. Teaching young boys that girls don't matter is next level rape culture.
I miss camp. the local museum and boy scouts/girl scouts hosted a 2 week camp where you learnt about dinosaurs, hiking, outdoor sports and nature. it was so much fun.
